What is Lighthouse Circle?
In 2020, Sarah interviewed Gretchen for her podcast, Legends Interview Series. This started the journey into them creating The Lighthouse Circle. In 2021 they started Lighthouse Circle, a six month course to share their own experiences with loss, and their passion and commitment to the important work of grief support. They set to create an open minded atmosphere where people can be themselves; uncensored, raw and messy. As you grieve, you will sometimes feel broken but with Lighthouse Circle your inherent wholeness will be mirrored and lovingly held.
They will be running Lighthouse Circle Grief Support Group for the fifth time later starting October 8th 20:00 JST and October 10th 9:00 JST 2024.
Lighthouse Circle is for anyone needing support as they grieve a loss.
There are many kinds of losses including (but not limited to):
the death of a loved one
job loss
pregnancy loss
death of a pet
illness, estrangement or anticipation of a loss
Lighthouse Circle is also a space to tend to older, unresolved grief, or grief that has been passed down generationally.
This free content is taken from Resourcing and Taking Refuge, one of the monthly themes in Lighthouse Circle. Resourcing and taking refuge are two ways to care for ourselves during times of grief. These are completely unique to each individual. With continued gentle curiosity, we will explore what needs are arising and how to address those needs (resourcing). We will also discuss connecting to things bigger than ourselves that we can rely on and turn to for comfort like a sunset, poem or belief system (taking refuge).

We are never finished with grief. It is part of the fabric of living. It is always waiting to happen. Love makes memories and life precious; the grief that comes to us is proportionate to that love and is inescapable."

Sarah Furuya
Hi, I am Sarah and I live in the hills by the sea South of Tokyo, near the sacred shores of Kamakura, on the Miura Peninsula. From there I run my coaching business and Legends Podcast. The heart of my practice is the many ways to lead a life, and working with and telling people’s stories. I honor the influence of those passed and create space and ritual for them and their presence in my coaching spaces. I am passionate about looking at the taboos and lost traditions around death, mourning and grief.
I am also and executive and life coach, run retreats, writing programmes and clothing swaps, all in service of the communities that have emerged around me.

Hi, I'm Gretchen. I live in Japan with my family where we run DAIRYUJI Zen temple. Making grief support and mindfulness accessible for everyone to nurture well-being and a sense of belonging is my life's work. I studied with David Kessler to become a grief educator and under Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield to gain my mindfulness meditation teachers certificate. I love leading workshops, classes and retreats. My brother Chris died when I was five years old which deeply influenced my views on death and grief, ultimately guiding me to this calling. Drawing on many years of exploration, learning and unlearning, I am passionate about bringing elements of ritual, spirituality, creativity and mindfulness to create a supportive atmosphere at Lighthouse Circle.
